Sport in Australia is our identity as a Australian. Sport is key to our society from the elite sport to amateur sport. Sport is what bring us together and keeps us motivated. As the CoronaVirus effects sport from a local to a professional it proves that sport is something that we should nurture like a baby.
This what been said by local sporting competitions Premier Cricket Victoria in a statement “Cricket Victoria has made the decision to cancel all Premier Cricket finals from this week onwards. This decision has been made in the best interests of Premier Cricket participants and the wider community and to further protect players, staff, volunteers and match officials at all levels of the game plus the wider community during the global coronavirus pandemic,”.
AFL VICTORIA in there Statement
“We are determined to be part of the whole of community response to slow this COVID-19 virus down – and in doing so, help the broader community and our health systems to cope.
Following a series of meetings over the last number of days involving the AFL and all State and Territory CEOs, recommendations have been made in relation to Community football.
Consistent with the decision yesterday in relation to State League football and the national and state talent programs, all AFL and AFL State association managed or operated leagues along with the NAB AFL Auskick Centres programs currently operating or set to begin, will be postponed until 31st May 2020″.
Those statements were posted today and show’s how much this virus is impacting local sport.
As elite and local competitions are cancel. Our sporting landscape is changing. Lets look at a local level. Local Aussie rules competioms are delay until may that means all those volunteers, helpers and clubs that work hard in the off season are having to work harder to fix issues such fixtures, ground management and fundraising and functions as we as society are trying to work out when can we can go watch our local footy. Now to make it more complex sport like Cricket is in same spot with finals being postpone and first time since the world war there will be no winner of District cricket finals around the nation. Questions are being raised what will happend in 6 months time when it is October and local footy leagues are still playing and cricket will want to move in? Could we see Summer sport play through late march so the footy leagues can finish their final series. What happens to volunteers and those who day and night at associations and clubs? This is the world we live in uncertainty and concern.
On to Elite sport it is hard to understand why the AFL and NRL are wanting to start while other elite sporting competitions such as the NBA, MLB, NHL, EPL, UFEA , Cricket Australia, ATP and WTA have all cancel competitions. It is like the AFL and NRL are higher than anything and which I personality like to see footy play in barren stadiums it would quite contradiction from government officials. Prime Minster Scott Morrison said today “Banning of all gatherings outdoor max of 500 and for indoor gathering 100 people”,. .But as disgrace AFL player Manger Ricky Nixion said a while back quote “Footy will never have a recession”,. So we may have some sport on the weekend but at what cost.
